Adapt vs adopt on the ACT

October 8, 2026 · 5 min read

Adapt means to change to fit. Adopt means to take on as your own. The lab adapted the method. The school adopted the policy. Diction as a set is in word choice.

Change versus take

If something is being altered to work in a new setting, use adapt. If a plan, a child, or a habit is being taken up, use adopt. Adapt a puppy is the usual miss.

Already versus all ready is another look-alike pair, in already versus all ready. Affect versus effect is in affect versus effect. Grammar overall is in ACT grammar rules.

The bottom line

Change to fit: adapt. Take on: adopt.
