I is a subject. Me is an object. Drop the other person and read the sentence with only the pronoun. Maya and I finished the section works because I finished works. The coach asked Maya and me works because the coach asked me works. Pronoun case overall is in pronoun case.
The drop test
The extra name is what tricks people into Maya and I everywhere. After a verb or a preposition, the object form is right: between you and me, not between you and I. Between versus among is a different word-choice item, in between versus among.
Who and whom use the same split
He maps to who. Him maps to whom. That pair is in who versus whom. Agreement — singular versus plural — is a different job, in pronoun agreement.
The bottom line
Cover the other name. If I still works, keep it. If you need me, use me.
