ACT Math questions are loosely ordered easy-to-hard—work in order early, but skip time sinks on first pass, bank easy points, then return to hard items with whatever time remains. Order strategy is pacing, not cheating the test.
Default: stay in order at first
Questions 1–30 are usually faster wins; later items tempt you to burn minutes. Part of overall improving ACT Math.
When to skip
- You have no entry after 30–45 seconds
- A long word problem with heavy setup
- Topics you have not prepped (rare trig, ugly logs)
Bubble a guess, mark mentally, move on—no penalty for wrong answers. See should you guess on the ACT.
Second pass
Return with remaining time; easiest of your skipped set first. Use plugging in and calculator shortcuts on stuck algebra.
