Function of a sentence on ACT Reading

October 13, 2026 · 5 min read

A function-of-a-sentence question asks what that sentence is doing in the paragraph, not what it says on its own. Paragraph jobs as a set are in paragraph jobs.

Job, not paraphrase

Introduce, illustrate, contrast, concede, or conclude. If a choice restates the sentence, it is usually too narrow. Detail questions want the fact, in detail questions.

The author's purpose for the whole passage is a wider lens, in author's purpose. Tone is in author's attitude.

The bottom line

Name the job in the paragraph. A restatement of the sentence is not the function.
