Remainder when dividing on the ACT

October 13, 2026 · 5 min read

Remainder is what is left after whole-number division. 17 ÷ 5 is 3 remainder 2, because 5 × 3 = 15 and 2 is left. Integers as a set are in integers on ACT Math.

Not the decimal

17 ÷ 5 = 3.4 is true and still not the remainder. Remainder 2 is the leftover count. GCF and LCM are a related leftover, in GCF and LCM.

The short list is in ACT Math formulas.

The bottom line

Dividend = divisor × quotient + remainder. Remainder is smaller than the divisor.
