Scatterplots and correlation on ACT Math

October 5, 2026 · 5 min read

A scatterplot plots pairs of numbers. Correlation describes the direction: up together, down together, or no pattern. Correlation is not causation. Charts like this on Math are in charts and tables.

Direction, then strength

Points that climb as you move right are a positive association. Points that fall are negative. A cloud with no tilt is about zero. A line of best fit is the regression you can run in Desmos, in regression in Desmos.

Direct and inverse variation are equations, not just a cloud of points, in direct and inverse variation. Box plots summarize one variable, in box plots.

The bottom line

Read the tilt. Do not claim that one variable caused the other unless the question already built an experiment.
