Conflicting Viewpoints is the one ACT Science passage with almost no graphs—map each scientist's main claim, note where they agree or disagree, and treat questions like ACT Reading comparisons. Save this passage for last; it takes the longest and has the least data to shortcut. Part of the 3 ACT Science passage types.
What they look like
Two to four labeled viewpoints (Scientist 1, Student 2, etc.), each with a paragraph explaining a hypothesis. There may be a small diagram, but most answers come from the text, not figures.
Build a viewpoint map
As you read, jot one line per person: what they believe and why. Example: "Viewpoint 3: extinction caused by disease, not climate." You will refer back to this map for every question—do not reread full paragraphs unless you must.
Common question patterns
- Agreement: Which two viewpoints would agree that…?
- Disagreement: Which viewpoint would reject the claim that…?
- New evidence: Which finding would most support Viewpoint 2?
- Weaken/strengthen:Which result would undermine Scientist 1's hypothesis?
Process like Reading: find evidence in the viewpoint text, eliminate choices that contradict it.
Save it for last
