Independent vs dependent variables

October 5, 2026 · 5 min read

The independent variable is what the experimenters change. The dependent variable is what they measure in response. On a graph, independent is usually the x-axis and dependent is the y-axis. Experimental design as a whole is in experimental design.

What was set, what was read

Temperature the team chose is independent. Growth they recorded is dependent. If they run the same setup without the treatment, that is a control, in the control group.

Axis labels tell you the same story in one glance, in axis labels and units. Direct versus inverse then describes how those two variables move, in direct versus inverse.

The bottom line

Changed on purpose: independent. Measured as a result: dependent. Read the axes before you name either one.
