The right figure and the right interval

October 4, 2026 · 5 min read

Most missed Science trends are the right pattern on the wrong figure, or the right figure over the wrong stretch of the axis. How trends work once you are looking at the right place is in interpreting trends. A faster first pass over the figure is in reading graphs faster.

Name the figure before you look

The question will say Figure 2, Experiment 3, or a specific species. Put a finger on that label, or highlight it, before you read the line. A neighboring graph often moves the opposite way. Answering from Figure 1 when the question said Figure 2 is a reading error, not a science error.

Then cut the axis

“From day 14 to day 42” is not the whole study. A line can fall, level off, and rise again. Inside the window the question named, it may only rise. Read the units on that window first. Axis labels are in axis labels and units. Yes/no questions that depend on this window are in yes/no because questions.

The bottom line

Figure first, interval second, direction third. Do not describe the whole graph when the question named a slice.
