ACT scores for liberal arts colleges

October 3, 2026 · 6 min read

Selective liberal arts colleges often publish ACT middle-50% bands in the high 20s to mid-30s among submitters, and many remain test-optional. A 31 can be typical at one LAC and soft at another.

How to read an LAC range

Small colleges report submitters, so test-optional years inflate the band. Aim at the 75th of the campuses you will actually apply to: find your target score.

When to submit

Send a score at or above the 50th, ideally the 75th. Leave it off if you sit below the 25th and the school is optional: should you submit. Building the list: build a college list.

The bottom line

Look up each LAC. Do not treat "liberal arts" as one number, and do not skip a useful score because the college is small.
