Start in the middle of the choices on ACT Math

October 13, 2026 · 5 min read

When you plug choices into an equation, start with B or C. One test tells you whether to go higher, lower, or stop. The full plug-in method is in plugging in answers.

Ordered choices do the work

Math choices are usually listed from smallest to largest, in choices listed in order. If C is too small, you only need D. If C is too big, you only need A.

Skip a choice that would take longer to test than the others, in the two-pass method. There are four choices, not five, in four answer choices.

The bottom line

Test a middle choice first. One comparison often cuts the list in half.
