Unit conversion on the ACT

October 13, 2026 · 5 min read

Multiply by a fraction that equals 1, with the old unit on the bottom. Cancel until only the new unit remains. 3 hours × (60 minutes / 1 hour) = 180 minutes. Ratios as a set are in fractions and ratios.

Write the 1

12 inches in a foot, 100 centimeters in a meter, 60 minutes in an hour. Square units need the conversion twice; cubic units need it three times. Density uses units too, in density.

Rate problems that mix hours and minutes are in d = rt. The short list is in ACT Math formulas.

The bottom line

Conversion fraction = 1. Old unit cancels. Squares and cubes scale with the power.
