Backsolving on ACT Math

October 3, 2026 · 5 min read

Backsolving means plugging the answer choices into the question until one works. On enhanced Math you have four choices (A–D). Start in the middle, then move up or down.

When to backsolve

  • The answers are numbers and the algebra is messy.
  • The question is "what is x" and you can test x quickly.

Common traps: common Math mistakes.

When not to

Graph or word-setup items where substituting four choices takes longer than writing one equation. Fifty minutes is still the clock.

The bottom line

Backsolve when the choices are cheaper than the algebra. It is a tool, not a personality.
