How to finish ACT English on time

October 1, 2026 · 7 min read

Finish ACT English on time by working paragraph-by-paragraph, spending no more than about 30 seconds stuck on one item, and saving a couple of minutes for whole-passage rhetoric questions. You have 35 minutes for 50 questions—about 42 seconds each—which is the tightest average on the enhanced ACT.

Use graf-by-graf, not sentence-hopping

Read one paragraph, answer every question tagged in it, then move on. That keeps context for transitions, add/delete, and placement items. Jumping from underline to underline is how people miss rhetoric that depends on the sentences around it. Full comparison of approaches: ACT English passage strategy.

The 30-second skip rule

If you are still debating after half a minute, pick the best remaining choice, flag it, and keep the paragraph moving. A two-minute grammar argument costs three other questions. Come back if the passage ends early. Guessing is free: should you guess.

Watch the rhetoric traps that steal time

Add/delete, yes/no, and "where should this sentence go" need the whole paragraph, sometimes the whole passage. Do not answer them from the underlined clause alone. Question-type map: ACT English question types. Macro-logic: English macro-logic.

Checkpoints

English is usually several passages. Glance at the clock after each one. If a passage ate more than its share of 35 minutes, shorten the next one: still read the paragraph, but skip faster. You want every question clicked or bubbled before time is called.

If you finish with a pile of extra minutes

You may be rushing and leaking careless errors. Slow down just enough to read the full sentence. Careless-error habits: stop careless mistakes. Score work: improve your ACT English score.

The bottom line

Paragraph, answer, skip at 30 seconds, repeat. English scoring is a volume game: 50 questions, no penalty, and context you only get if you keep reading.
