How to update ACT scores after you apply

October 2, 2026 · 6 min read

After you apply, a new ACT score usually needs two steps: update the self-reported testing section if the portal allows it, and send an official report if the college wants one. Do not assume the Common App forwards the new number by itself. Some schools want you to email the unofficial screenshot and wait for the official file.

If the application is still unlocked

Edit the testing section, save, and submit the change if the Common App or Coalition app still lets you. Then order the official send for colleges that require it by the deadline.

If the application is already submitted

  • Look for an "update testing" form on the student portal.
  • If none exists, use the official send plus a short portal message.
  • Rush only when the deadline is inside about two weeks: rush scores.

After a deferral or waitlist

A new score is one update among several. Deferral: new score after a deferral. Waitlist: scores on the waitlist.

The bottom line

Self-report if you can, official send if they need it, and a portal note if the file is already frozen. The new Composite does not teleport into the application.

Start practicing

Start with a free diagnostic, then drill your weak spots with 15-question quizzes and track how you're doing across Reading, English, and Math. Compare plans whenever you're ready to go further.
