What is the ACT ELA score?

October 4, 2026 · 5 min read

The ACT ELA score is a 1–36 blend of English, Reading, and Writing. You only get one if you sit the optional essay. It is not the Composite, and it does not replace a low English score.

How it is built

ACT combines English, Reading, and the 2–12 Writing score into one ELA number. Skip Writing and you have no ELA to send. How the report looks: how to read a score report.

Who should care

A campus or scholarship that still lists Writing or ELA. Colleges that require the essay: colleges that require Writing.

The bottom line

ELA needs the essay. Sit Writing only if someone will read the blend. Protect English, Math, and Reading either way.

Start practicing

Start with a free diagnostic, then drill your weak spots with 15-question quizzes and track how you're doing across Reading, English, and Math. Compare plans whenever you're ready to go further.
