ACT English

Read and answer ACT English as you go

October 5, 2026 · 5 min read

Do not read the whole English passage first. Read until the first underline, answer that question, and keep going. The underline is still in your working memory, and you do not spend a minute on a first pass that scores zero. Passage method more broadly is in how to approach ACT English passages.

When you need more than the underline

Add/delete, transition, and order questions need the sentences around the blank. Slow down for those. Grammar underlines usually need only the sentence you are in. Transitions are in transition questions. Add/delete is in add/delete questions.

English is a sprint. Reading is not. Switching gears between sections is in dual pacing across sections.

The bottom line

Answer as you hit each underline. Save a full reread for the handful of questions that ask about the whole paragraph.
