English and Math are sprints: apply a rule and move. Reading and Science are searches: find the line or the figure, then answer. Do not bring English speed into a Science graph, and do not reread a whole English passage the way you reread fiction. Seconds per question are in ACT time per question.
Switch the method, not just the subject
English: stop at the underline, in read and answer as you go. Math: skip a stuck item and return, in stuck on Math. Reading: map, then look up. Science: locator, then figure, in going to the figure.
The bottom line
Between sections, reset. The next one is a different job even if the clock looks similar.
