When a Science question names Figure 2 or Table 1, go there first. Do not start by reading the introduction. Most of those items are a lookup. Data-representation passages are built for this, in data representation.
Locator, then line
The question will hand you the figure number, the experiment number, or a species name. Put a finger on that label, then read the axis. Looking at the neighboring figure is the usual miss, in the right figure and the right interval.
Intro text waits until a question asks for a definition or a method that is not in the graph. Skipping that intro on the first pass is in skipping the intro first. Faster graph reading is in reading graphs faster.
The bottom line
Named figure, then the point on that figure. Read prose only when the locator is not in the visual.
