ACT Reading

Skim ACT Reading for structure

October 6, 2026 · 5 min read

Spend a couple of minutes mapping the passage, not memorizing it. First sentences, last sentences, and pivot words are the map. Then the questions tell you where to reread. Passage approach overall is in ACT Reading strategy.

What to mark

Topic of each paragraph. Names. Dates. However, but, therefore. You are building a table of contents, not a summary you could recite. Names and dates as locators are in names and dates.

Trying to hold every sentence is the usual miss, in do not memorize the passage. Edges of paragraphs still carry main ideas, in first and last sentences.

The bottom line

Map the turns. Reread for proof when a question asks.
