Solid geometry on ACT Math

Solid geometry on the ACT means 3D figures—boxes, cylinders, spheres, and sometimes cones—where you compute volume, surface area, or a missing dimension using memorized formulas and careful reading. These questions reward formula recall plus one decision: are you measuring what fits inside or what covers the outside?

Volume formulas to know cold

The ACT does not provide a formula sheet, so these should be automatic:

  • Rectangular prism (box): length times width times height
  • Cylinder: pi times radius squared times height
  • Sphere: four thirds pi times radius cubed
  • Cone: one third pi times radius squared times height (less common)

Surface area is a different question

Volume asks how much space is inside; surface area asks how much material you would need to wrap the figure. For a box, add the areas of all six faces: 2 times the quantity length times width, plus length times height, plus width times height. A cylinder adds the two circular ends (2 pi r squared) to the side that unrolls into a rectangle (2 pi r times height). A sphere is 4 pi r squared. Read the stem before you pick a formula— "how much paint" or "how much wrapping paper" signals surface area.

When the ACT gives you the formula

Unusual solids—pyramids, prisms with triangular bases, or composite 3D figures—often include the formula in the question. Do not panic; plug in the labeled dimensions and watch units. The hard part is usually identifying which numbers belong in the formula, not deriving it.

Multi-step 3D problems

Harder items combine solids: a cylinder stacked on a box, a sphere inscribed in a cube, or a cone inside a cylinder. Break the figure into pieces, compute each volume or surface area, then add or subtract. These chain several steps and show up among the hardest ACT Math topics.

Radius vs diameter and unit traps

Circle-based solids almost always use the radius. If the problem gives a diameter of 10, use 5 in the formula. Watch for mixed units—a height in inches and a radius in feet—and convert before you calculate. Volume conversions cube the linear factor (1 foot = 12 inches, but 1 cubic foot = 1,728 cubic inches).
