How much geometry is on the ACT?

May 19, 2026 · 6 min read

Geometry makes up roughly a third of ACT Math, covering plane geometry (lines, angles, triangles, circles, area, volume) and coordinate geometry. It's second only to algebra in question count, so it's worth giving it real attention.

What geometry the ACT tests

Expect angles and parallel lines, triangle properties (including special right triangles), circles (area, circumference, arcs), polygons, area and perimeter, and 3D volume and surface area. Coordinate geometry adds slope, distance, and midpoint.

Why formulas matter so much here

The ACT provides no formula sheet, so geometry really rewards memorization. Know your area, volume, Pythagorean, and special-triangle formulas cold; see formulas to memorize for ACT Math.

Coordinate geometry is fast points

Slope, distance, and midpoint questions are formulaic. Once those are automatic, you can answer them quickly and bank time for harder problems.

Watch for multi-step figures

Harder geometry combines shapes, such as a triangle inscribed in a circle, or a composite area. These chain several formulas, so they appear among the hardest ACT Math topics.

Draw and label every figure

When a question describes a figure without showing one, sketch it. Labeling given values prevents careless mistakes and often reveals the path to the answer.

Practice the full topic mix

Geometry pairs with algebra to form most of the section; see the full breakdown in what math topics are on the ACT. Drill geometry sets on thirty-six and review misses to lock it in.
