Do engineering colleges care about ACT Science?

October 1, 2026 · 7 min read

Many engineering, CS, and nursing programs still like to see ACT Science—or the STEM score that averages Math and Science—even though Science is optional on the enhanced ACT and is not in the Composite. Check each college. When the school is silent, taking Science is the safer default for STEM majors.

Why STEM admissions still glance at it

Engineering faculty care whether you can read graphs, experiments, and conflicting viewpoints under time. That is closer to lab classes than the Reading section is. Some colleges also use Science or STEM for scholarship grids or for placement into first-year chemistry or physics. Scores for course placement.

When to take Science

  • You are applying engineering, CS, pre-med, nursing, or physical science.
  • A college or honors college lists Science or STEM on its testing page.
  • Science practice scores are within a few points of Math—you will not tank a report they might see.

When skipping is reasonable

  • The school is test-blind or clearly says they ignore Science.
  • You are applying non-STEM and Science practice is far below your Composite.
  • Adding Science would wreck pacing or accommodations logistics on an already long day. Timing: how long is the ACT.

Math still carries more weight

A 34 Math / 24 Science STEM score is an odd story for engineering. Fix Math first: improve ACT Math. Then use Science strategy: improve ACT Science.

The bottom line

For STEM, default to taking Science unless a college tells you not to. For everyone else, take it only if it helps a report you will send. ACT vs SAT if you are choosing a STEM major: ACT vs SAT for STEM majors.
