How long is the ACT?

On the enhanced ACT, the multiple-choice core runs about two hours without Science or Writing: English 35 minutes, Math 50 minutes, and Reading 40 minutes—plus breaks and check-in that push total seated time closer to three hours or more if you add optional sections. Plan your morning around the full schedule, not just the timed sections.

Section-by-section timing

• English: 35 minutes
• Math: 50 minutes
• Reading: 40 minutes
• Science (optional): 40 minutes
• Writing (optional): 40 minutes

Without Science or Writing, core testing time is roughly 2 hours 5 minutes. Add Science and you are near 2 hours 45 minutes of testing. Add Writing after that and you are looking at another 40 minutes.

Breaks and arrival buffer

Short breaks between sections are built into the day. Factor check-in, ID review, seating, and instructions before the first section starts. Many students should plan to be at the center early and expect a long morning even if the "clock time" on sections looks shorter than older ACT guides.
