Scratch paper on the digital ACT

October 4, 2026 · 5 min read

On the digital ACT, the center gives you scratch paper. You do not write in a booklet, and you do not bring your own paper. Paper testing is the opposite: you mark the booklet, and scratch paper is not part of the setup. Format differences are in digital or paper ACT.

What you actually get

The proctor hands out paper and collects it before you leave. Use it for algebra, for a quick diagram, and for a list of questions you want to revisit. You cannot take it with you, and you cannot bring a stack from home. What you are allowed to carry in is in what to bring to the ACT.

What still lives on the screen

Highlighting and flagging stay in the testing app. A handheld calculator is separate from the scratch paper, and you may still bring one. That is in bringing a calculator on the digital ACT. The on-screen tools are in digital ACT tools.

The bottom line

Use the paper they give you. Leave your own notebook at home, and do not expect to keep the sheet.

Start practicing

Start with a free diagnostic, then drill your weak spots with 15-question quizzes and track how you're doing across Reading, English, and Math. Compare plans whenever you're ready to go further.
