How to get a 27 on the ACT

October 3, 2026 · 6 min read

A 27 Composite is the rounded average of English, Math, and Reading—between a solid 25 and a 28 merit step. You get there by lifting any core section still in the low 20s and finishing every section. Science is optional and does not enter the Composite.

The Composite math

29 + 27 + 25 averages 27. 30 + 28 + 23 also averages 27. A 19 in any core section usually blocks a clean 27. Fix the floor first.

What to practice

Official timed sections, error log on repeating types, one full core each week. The general raise: how to raise your ACT score.

The bottom line

Treat 27 as a three-section average. Raise the weakest core, then decide whether the list actually needs a 28 or 30.
