How to get a 34 on the ACT

October 3, 2026 · 6 min read

A 34 Composite is the rounded average of English, Math, and Reading—about 33.5 or higher. A single 30 will usually block it. The work is eliminating half-right traps, not learning new chapters. Science is optional and off the Composite.

The Composite math

36 + 34 + 32 averages 34. 35 + 35 + 32 averages 34. 36 + 36 + 29 averages ~33.7 and can stay a 33. Fix the 29 before you chase a perfect English.

What a 34 looks like

Enhanced sections: 50 / 45 / 36. You miss a tiny handful. Rhetoric and late Math decide it. Careless errors are the leak: stop careless mistakes.

When 34 is enough

Many highly selective 75ths sit at 34–35. Ivy-range context: Ivy League ACT scores. A 36 is a different project: how to get a 36. If you already clear every 75th, stop: when to stop retaking.

The bottom line

A 34 is three high-30s-or-better scores with almost no giveaways. Lift the lowest core section, then stop if the list is satisfied.
