Study Plans & Timing

Should you take the ACT before or after AP exams?

October 2, 2026 · 6 min read

Sit the ACT before AP week if you still need a score for the college list. Sit it after May only if the Composite is already close and April would collide with four AP finals. The exams share some math and reading stamina. They do not share a useful study plan in the same week.

Take the ACT before APs when

  • You have no official score yet.
  • February or April still gives you a retake before senior fall.
  • You are a junior who can use spring break: spring break plan.

Wait until June when

  • You already have a usable score and May is four or more APs.
  • April registration would land in the worst two weeks of school.
  • You can treat June as a quiet retake. How AP scores sit next to the ACT: AP scores vs ACT.

Do not combine the prep

AP Calc review is not ACT Math timing. AP Lang is not ACT English concision. In April, pick one exam family per night. Short ACT blocks still fit: short sessions.

The bottom line

If you still need the Composite, take April and protect May for APs. If you already have the Composite, skip April and use June only as a retake.
