What is a good ACT Science score?

October 2, 2026 · 6 min read

A good ACT Science score is one you are willing to send: at or above the Science or STEM range of the colleges that still look at it. Science is optional on the enhanced ACT and does not enter the Composite. A 30 Science next to a 24 Composite does not raise the Composite. A 24 Science next to a 32 Composite can still be worth sending for engineering if the school wants the section.

How to read the number

Science is still scored 1–36. Nationally, the middle of the pack sits near the high teens to low 20s depending on the year. A 23 is around the old readiness benchmark conversation. A 28–32 is strong for most STEM applicants. A 34–36 is the engineering/CS flex.

STEM score vs Composite

ACT can still report a STEM score that blends Math and Science. Engineering programs care more about that pair than about a 36 English. Deep dive: do engineering colleges care about Science.

When a "good" Science score is not worth sitting

  • None of your colleges ask for it or report it.
  • Adding 40 questions would lower your English/Math/Reading practice scores.
  • You already have AP science and a strong Math score and the campus is test-optional on Science.

Format reminder: Science is 40 questions in 40 minutes when you add it. It is mostly graphs and experiments, not a chemistry final: is ACT Science mostly reading.

The bottom line

A good Science score is one that helps a campus that still reads Science. It never fixes a Composite, and you should not sit the section just to have a fourth number.
