The enhanced ACT core (English, Math, Reading) is about 2 hours 5 minutes of testing with a short break after Math. Adding Science and Writing adds time and another break. Eat before you arrive; snacks stay outside the room.
A typical Saturday shape
- English 50 questions / 35 minutes.
- Math 45 questions / 50 minutes.
- Short break (often around 15 minutes).
- Reading 36 questions / 40 minutes.
- Optional Science 40/40, then optional Writing.
Writing adds more time after the multiple-choice: how long with Writing.
What you can do on the break
Eat the snack you packed, use the restroom, reset. Do not open notes or a phone if staff forbid it—centers differ, and a violation can cancel the score. Pack list: what to bring.
The bottom line
Know whether you added Science or Writing so the morning is not a surprise. Fuel before the test, use the Math-to-Reading break, and keep food out of the room.
Start practicing
Start with a free diagnostic, then drill your weak spots with 15-question quizzes and track how you're doing across Reading, English, and Math. Compare plans whenever you're ready to go further.
