A straightedge on ACT Science graphs

October 6, 2026 · 5 min read

To read a value off a Science graph, hold scratch paper or a card as a straightedge along the axis. On paper, a pencil works the same way. This is not the bubble-sheet-as-ruler trick, which is paper-only, in using the answer sheet as a ruler.

Track the line

Interpolation and extrapolation both get easier when the edge is straight. Line up with the tick you care about, then slide to the curve. Trends and in-between points are in interpolating and extrapolating.

Digital zoom is another way to see the same tick, in zooming Science graphs. Scratch paper on the digital test is in scratch paper on the digital ACT.

The bottom line

A straight edge beats a hovering finger. Use paper, a card, or a pencil.
