October 3, 2026 · 5 min read

The enhanced ACT core is 131 multiple-choice questions: 50 English, 45 Math, and 36 Reading. Optional Science adds 40. Optional Writing is one essay. The Composite averages only the three core sections.

The core

  • English: 50 questions, 35 minutes.
  • Math: 45 questions, 50 minutes, four choices (A–D).
  • Reading: 36 questions, 40 minutes, four single passages.

Time per item: time per question. Total length: how long is the ACT.

Optional add-ons

Science is 40 questions in 40 minutes and does not enter the Composite. Writing is a separate 2–12 score. Is Science optional, should you take Writing.

The bottom line

Memorize 50 / 45 / 36 for the score that colleges average. Add 40 Science or an essay only if a campus will read them.
