Should you take the ACT as a freshman?

October 4, 2026 · 5 min read

Most ninth-graders should skip the official ACT. Use PreACT 8/9, Aspire, or a single untimed official section at home. Sit a real Saturday when algebra and timed reading exist.

When a freshman sitting makes sense

You already finished Algebra II, you want one official for curiosity, and nobody will treat a 19 as a ceiling. Calendar: when to take the ACT.

When it wastes money

You are still in Algebra I. A cold official becomes a story the student has to unlearn. Wait for junior year: junior-year timeline.

The bottom line

Freshman year is for content, not a Composite. Save the fee unless the student is already past the math the ACT uses.

Start practicing

Start with a free diagnostic, then drill your weak spots with 15-question quizzes and track how you're doing across Reading, English, and Math. Compare plans whenever you're ready to go further.
