What if your calculator dies on the ACT

October 2, 2026 · 5 min read

If your calculator dies, raise your hand, try a backup if you brought one, and keep moving. Enhanced ACT Math is built so most items can be done by hand. Do not freeze for five minutes on a dead battery.

Digital testers

Some on-screen tools exist, but they are not a full graphing replacement and not Desmos-on-SAT. Learn them before test day: digital ACT tools. Desmos question: can you use Desmos.

Paper testers

Staff will not always have a loaner. Switch to the backup or to pencil. Skip calculator-heavy items, finish the rest, then return. You should already know when the calculator is optional: when not to use the calculator.

The bottom line

Two calculators, fresh batteries, and a hand-math backup. A dead TI is an inconvenience, not a voided Math score.

Start practicing

Start with a free diagnostic, then drill your weak spots with 15-question quizzes and track how you're doing across Reading, English, and Math. Compare plans whenever you're ready to go further.
