How to practice the ACT with extended time

October 2, 2026 · 6 min read

Practice on the clock you will have on test day. For 50% extra time on the enhanced ACT, that is about 53 minutes for English, 75 for Math, and 60 for Reading—not the standard 35/50/40. Training on the short clock and testing on the long one (or the reverse) teaches the wrong pace.

Do the math once and write it on a card

Standard × 1.5 for time-and-a-half, × 2 for double time. Science 40/40 becomes 60 or 80. Confirm your official letter; some students receive extra time only on certain sections.

How to run a practice section

Same item counts: 50 English, 45 Math, 36 Reading. Start a timer for the approved minutes. Still use a skip rule so you do not spend 12 minutes on one Math item. Digital testers should use the same tools: digital tools.

Stamina is the hidden skill

Extra time makes a longer morning. Practice at least one full core sitting at the extended length before test day: build stamina.

The bottom line

Rehearse the approved minutes, the real item counts, and a full extended morning. The accommodation is only useful if you have practiced using it.

Start practicing

Start with a free diagnostic, then drill your weak spots with 15-question quizzes and track how you're doing across Reading, English, and Math. Compare plans whenever you're ready to go further.
