How to apply for ACT accommodations (TAA)

October 1, 2026 · 8 min read

ACT accommodations go through TAA—Test Accessibility and Accommodations—submitted by a school official with documentation that matches what you already use in class, not a last-minute email from a parent. Start when you pick a test date. Approval is not automatic, and some supports change where and how you sit.

Who files

A designated school official (counselor, testing coordinator, or special-education lead) submits in TAA. Homeschool families work with ACT's published homeschool accommodations path. Homeschool registration. You still register in MyACT and mark that you need accommodations. How to register.

Documentation

  • Current IEP, 504, or equivalent plan
  • Diagnosis and history that match the requested supports
  • Proof you use those supports in school (not only on weekends)

New or extra-time-only requests with thin paperwork get delayed. Ask the official what ACT asked for last year at your school.

National center vs special testing

Time-and-a-half in one sitting often stays at a Saturday center. Multi-day testing, extra breaks beyond the standard set, or other supports may move you to school-based special testing. Digital vs paper depends on what ACT and your site can deliver for that approval. Digital or paper ACT. School-day sittings: school-day vs Saturday.

Practice with the timing you will actually get

If you are approved for 50% extra, take practice tests at that clock, not standard time. If you will test on paper, do not only drill digital highlighting. Tools on the online test: digital ACT tools.

If the decision is no, or late

You can usually appeal with more documentation. Do not assume a late request will land before the date. Pick a later national or school-day sitting rather than testing without supports you need.

The bottom line

Loop in the school official early, match the request to your plan, and rehearse the approved timing. TAA is logistics. The score still comes from prep. English-learner supports are a different request: ACT English learner supports.
