Should you take the April ACT?

October 3, 2026 · 6 min read

Take the April ACT if you are a junior who wants a first official score with room for a fall retake. Skip it if April lands in the middle of four AP finals and you have no timed enhanced practice yet. April is the usual spring national date, not a last-chance sitting.

April is a good fit when

  • You can use spring break for a short block: spring break plan.
  • You want a junior-spring number and a September/October retake if needed. Junior-year timeline.
  • Practice is already close to your target.

April is a weak fit when

  • May AP week will erase prep. Sit June instead: June ACT.
  • You have never taken a timed English 50/35, Math 45/50, Reading 36/40 core.

The bottom line

April is the default junior official if school is manageable. If May will flatten you, move the sitting—do not take a cold diagnostic in April.

Start practicing

Start with a free diagnostic, then drill your weak spots with 15-question quizzes and track how you're doing across Reading, English, and Math. Compare plans whenever you're ready to go further.
