Which states offer a free ACT

October 1, 2026 · 6 min read

A free ACT usually means your state or district pays for a school-day sitting. That is not the same as "the ACT is required for college," and the list of funded states changes with contracts. Ask your counselor whether juniors get a paid seat this year before you buy a Saturday date.

How to tell what you have

  • A letter or portal from the school about a spring junior ACT
  • No MyACT charge for that date
  • Science or Writing included or omitted by the district contract—not by you

Confirm Science before you skip Saturday Science prep. Is Science optional.

What "free" does not cover

Extra national retakes, late fees, extra score reports beyond the included set, and TIR are usually on you unless a waiver applies. How much the ACT costs, fee waivers.

Should you still buy a Saturday seat?

Yes if you need a different date, a missing section, or a retake before EA/ED. EA vs ED and your ACT date. The free sit is a baseline, not always the last word.

The bottom line

Free means the district or state wrote a check for a school-day exam. Take it if it is offered. Verify this year locally—do not trust a five-year-old map.

Start practicing

Start with a free diagnostic, then drill your weak spots with 15-question quizzes and track how you're doing across Reading, English, and Math. Compare plans whenever you're ready to go further.
